Shakira and Ombeli - January 2012

Shakira and Ombeli remain the soft spot in our hearts, nobody will ever forget in what bad physical condition they were when they arrived on N/a'ankusê, but goodness have they improved! They are beautiful creatures reminding us how important it is to conserve their species for the next generation.

Both Shakira and Ombeli are excellent climbers, and like to show us whenever they have a chance. Especially in the last weeks when it has been very hot they love sitting on the big tree in the middle of their camp and enjoy the fresh air blowing up there!

Usually Shakira is the one that has the idea and sits in the tree first, but Ombeli often then shows her that he is superior and chases her off, just to take exactly the same position himself. He often does this when there are visitors, he just adores being the centre of attention!

Both our leopards still like to challenge the electric wire fencing, even since we have added another wire at the bottom of their fence. We have actually reduced the time we spend with the leopards during feeding time, just to reduce the electric shocks they would both receive by constantly pounding and getting too close to the wire. Shakira actually sits like a meerkat with her front paws on the wire! It does not seem to damage them, but we are sure that it is not nice for them so we leave them in peace as much as we can.
